Registration Questions
Learn how to collect custom information from attendees during registration
What are registration questions?
Registration questions are custom fields you add to your registration form to collect specific information from attendees. These questions help you gather data beyond basic contact information.
You might ask about dietary restrictions, t-shirt sizes, experience level, or anything else that helps you plan a better event.
Standard question library
EventNerds includes a library of commonly used questions that you can add with one click.
Common standard questions
- Dietary restrictions: Ask about food allergies or preferences
- T-shirt size: Collect sizes for event swag
- Job title: Learn about attendee roles
- Company name: See which organizations are attending
- Experience level: Find out if attendees are beginners, intermediate, or advanced
- How did you hear about us: Track your marketing effectiveness
- Accessibility needs: Ensure you can accommodate everyone
- Emergency contact: Collect emergency contact information
Adding a standard question
- Go to your event page
- Click on the "Registration" tab
- Find the "Questions" section
- Click "Add Question"
- Choose a question from the standard library
- Click "Add Question"
Tip: Start with standard questions when possible. They are tested and work well for most events.
Creating custom questions
If the standard questions do not meet your needs, you can create custom questions.
How to create a custom question
- Go to the Registration tab
- Click "Add Question"
- Choose "Create Custom Question"
- Fill in the question details
- Click "Create Question"
Custom question settings
When creating a custom question, you will configure:
- Question text: What you are asking (for example, "What topics are you most interested in?")
- Question type: How people will answer (text, multiple choice, checkboxes, etc.)
- Required: Whether people must answer this question
- Help text: Additional instructions or clarification
- Display order: Where this question appears in the form
Note: Keep your questions short and clear. Long or confusing questions lead to incomplete answers or abandoned registrations.
Question types
EventNerds supports several question types to match different kinds of information you want to collect.
Text input
A single line of text. Good for names, email addresses, or short answers.
Example:"What is your company name?"
Text area
Multiple lines of text. Good for longer responses or comments.
Example:"What do you hope to learn at this event?"
Multiple choice (radio buttons)
Choose one option from a list. Good when there is only one correct answer.
Example:"What is your experience level?" (Beginner / Intermediate / Advanced)
Checkboxes
Choose one or more options from a list. Good when multiple answers are possible.
Example:"Which topics interest you?" (Marketing / Sales / Product / Engineering)
Dropdown
Choose one option from a dropdown menu. Good for long lists of options.
Example:"What country are you from?" (List of countries)
Number
Enter a number. Good for quantities or numeric responses.
Example:"How many years of experience do you have?"
Date
Select a date from a calendar. Good for birth dates or specific dates.
Example:"What is your date of birth?"
Yes/No
A simple yes or no question.
Example:"Will you need parking at the venue?"
Tip: Use multiple choice or checkboxes instead of text input when possible. This makes data easier to analyze later.
Required vs optional questions
You can make questions required or optional based on how important the information is.
When to make questions required
Make a question required if:
- You absolutely need the information to plan the event
- It affects attendee safety or accessibility
- It is critical for logistics (like meal planning)
When to make questions optional
Make a question optional if:
- The information is nice to have but not essential
- You are collecting demographic data
- People might not feel comfortable answering
Note: Too many required questions can cause people to abandon registration. Only require what you truly need.
Question order and grouping
The order of your questions matters. People answer forms more easily when questions flow logically.
Best practices for question order
- Start with easy questions (name, email)
- Group similar questions together
- Put optional questions at the end
- Save sensitive questions for last
- End with open-ended questions
Changing question order
You can reorder questions by dragging and dropping them in the Questions section. EventNerds saves the order automatically.
Privacy and sensitive data
Be careful when collecting personal or sensitive information from attendees.
Types of sensitive information
- Medical information or health conditions
- Disability or accessibility needs
- Dietary restrictions (can reveal religious or medical information)
- Date of birth
- Government ID numbers
- Financial information
Best practices for sensitive data
- Only ask for information you truly need
- Explain why you are asking for sensitive information
- Make sensitive questions optional when possible
- Tell people how you will use and protect their data
- Follow privacy laws in your region (GDPR, CCPA, etc.)
- Limit who on your team can see sensitive answers
Note: Include a privacy policy on your registration page explaining how you handle attendee data. This builds trust and may be legally required.
Viewing responses
You can see all answers to your registration questions in the attendee list and individual profiles.
Individual responses
To see one person's answers:
- Go to the Attendees tab
- Click on an attendee's name
- Scroll to the "Registration Questions" section
All responses
To see all responses to a specific question:
- Go to the Registration tab
- Find the question in the Questions section
- Click "View Responses"
You will see a summary of all answers, including charts and graphs for multiple choice questions.
Exporting responses
When you export your attendee list, all registration question answers are included in the CSV file. This makes it easy to analyze data in spreadsheets or other tools.
Tip: Use the response summary to identify trends. For example, if many people ask for vegetarian meals, make sure you order enough.
Editing and deleting questions
You can edit or delete questions at any time, but be careful if people have already registered.
Editing questions
To edit a question:
- Go to the Registration tab
- Find the question in the Questions section
- Click "Edit"
- Make your changes
- Click "Save"
Deleting questions
If you delete a question, the answers from people who already registered are kept in their profiles, but the question will not appear for new registrations.
Note: Be very careful when editing questions after people have registered. Changing a question can make existing answers confusing or meaningless.
Conditional questions
Conditional questions only appear based on how someone answered a previous question. This keeps your form short and relevant.
When to use conditional questions
Conditional questions are useful when:
- You need follow-up information based on an answer
- Some questions only apply to certain people
- You want to keep the form short for most people
Example of conditional questions
First question: "Will you drive to the event?" (Yes / No)
If they answer "Yes," show: "Will you need parking at the venue?" (Yes / No)
This way, people who are not driving do not see irrelevant questions about parking.
Best practices for registration questions
Here are some tips for creating effective registration questions:
- Only ask for information you will actually use
- Keep questions short and clear
- Use standard questions from the library when possible
- Make as few questions required as possible
- Put questions in a logical order
- Use multiple choice instead of text when you can
- Explain why you are asking for sensitive information
- Test your registration form before launching
- Review responses regularly to identify issues
- Respect attendee privacy and protect their data
